Mt.Rogers Mountain Hike Weekend: Aug.25-27, 2006
We will leave Friday afternoon either together or separately to meet in Galax, Virginia (2:45 min.) at the Knight's Inn Motel. We'll have a late dinner together and be up early next morning to head for Mt. Rogers (highest peak in VA @ 5,700ft.) The hike is actually only about 3 miles (actually on the Appalachian Trail) and starts at 4,500ft. from Grayson Highlands St.Pk. but depending on who is going, there are some interesting loops and side trails we can take if we desire. There are never any mosquitoes there and wide open views from the abundant rock outcroppings are breath taking. Semi-wild horses also graze there in state owned meadows. The mountainsides are dotted plentifully with old 1920's Blueberry groves that are often still fruitful into early Sept. We will stay either in tents (I have plenty or you can rent them from REI) or if it rains we have the option of the Thomas Knob Shelter which is right on the A.T. Sunday morning we will have our own worship on the mountaintop. This is the highlight of the trip....after which we will have a 3 mile downhill hike to the parking lot. We should arrive home by mid-afternoon.
